FLORIDA BOOKS FOR KIDS
We know that in middle-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to children is 13 books for every child. In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one age appropriate book for 300 children. So the need becomes urgent.
BOOKS FOR KIDS is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch and is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization. Since 2014 BOOKS FOR KIDS has distributed more than 8700 books to boys and girls in underserved communities. These books allow the children to begin to build libraries at home.
Having books at home helps to improve their reading level and their comprehension. It broadens their world knowledge, increases their vocabulary and improves their lives.
We are currently in 5 Elementary schools serving over 800 boys and girls.
Florida BOOKS FOR KIDS supports the Campaign for Grade Level Reading that promotes improvements in the reading levels of students. This includes:
- Volunteer Reading Coaches
- Mentoring and Tutoring
- After School Programs
- Special Summer Programs
- Books are given to students in public and pre-school programs serving underserved youth.
Read Aloud Program:
- Community volunteers are professionally trained to go into schools and read to children, and engage students in a book discussion which will foster reading comprehension skills. Following each reading, the students are given a new book to help support and reinforce the importance of literacy.
Family Literacy workshops:
- Our workshops are designed to encourage parents or guardians and their children in the importance of reading. Each participant receives a take home literacy package and age appropriate books.
